, a developing story we're following in san francisco. police are searching for a man accused of setting his girlfriend on fire during an argument this afternoon. it happened shortly after noon today in the city's bay view district. monty francis in the bay view where he just spoke with the victim's family, this has to be hard for them to make any sense out of. >> it is certainly very hard, and family members watched in horror as this all the played out right here in the streets. the 25-year-old woman, we're told she suffered serious burns and she's now at the burn unit at st. francis hospital, the woman's clothes are still here, burned, visible on the street. we're told she attempted to throw off her jacket after her boyfriend doused her with a flammable liquid, then set her on fire. the victim's sister tells us the couple had been together for about six months, and they argued a lot. according to the sister, the couple was at the laundry mad just down the street, where they began to argue about their laundry, they were on their way back home and just outside the victim's house at about 12:

in san francisco now challenging the city's ban on public nudity today. activists filing a federal lawsuit claiming the ban violates their right to freedom of everything and expression. they want the court to issue an injunction against that ban which is set to take effect february 1st. city attorneys, they say the court has upheld nudity banses in other cities in the bay area. a hearing will be held in federal court this afternoon. >>> we could find out today if the bay area's newest casino gets to open its penthouse gaming floor. san jose's police chief is stepping down tomorrow. but he has promised to make a decision about casino matrix's eighth floor before he leaves. the penthouse is designed to offer high-stakes gambling and a panoramic view of silicon valley. the chief, kris moore, has expressed concerns over the casino's ability to safely monitor activity on that top floor. >> all right. >>> you and i have been talking about this all day. perfect timing. good weather, today is thursday, that means tomorrow is friday. christina loren is bringing it all for us. >> i am. and y

voluntarily met with san francisco police before he boarded a mid afternoon flight to atlanta. police say the sexual allegation involves crabtree inside a san francisco hotel early sunday morning. the day after the 49ers beat the packers. crabtree was not detained or arrested. he's willing to meet with police if they have additional questions for him. this is what his lawyer released in a statement from earlier today. on friday, january 18, 2013, michael voluntarily met with the san francisco police department and provided a statement. michael fully cooperated with the inspectors and will continue to do so throughout the investigation. out of respect and integrity for the process, we have no further comment at this time. as you mentioned, chris, once again michael crabtree has not spoken to reporters. at this point the 49ers have not made him available to talk to reporters. if that was the case, most likely he would be expected to talk football. later in sports, we'll preview the nfc championship game. we'll have a live report from atlanta. >> hard not to get distracted. >>> the hostage c

. >>> in san francisco, the teenage driver accused of causing a deadly crash while being chased by police made his first court appearance. he is accusesed of killing two people in the new year's day crash, one person died in a car and the second a pedestrian who was walking into a mission district liquor store, he was arraigned on a list of charges. including murder and attempted murder, the prosecutor said he wants morales kept behind bars for the rest of his life. if he is convicted he faces nor than 200 years in prison. and in san jose, coco bennett appeared in court to answer charges that he stripped naked and had a sword in a standoff with the police. his mother said she contacted police a week before this altercation asking for help. and police told her that there was nothing that they could do at that points. the drama played out tuesday in front of onlookers and a police crisis intervention team, and they found an assault rifle and ammunition in bennett's truck, the judge told his mother that he will stay behind bars and appointed a public attorney to defend him. >> what caused a fire

it all in public. today a judge waded into the fight over a new public nudity ban in san francisco. city officials say it's a matter of public safety. nudity advocates say it's an attempt to cover up their constitutional rights. and while both sides battled in court, protesters bared their souls and a lot more on the courthouse steps. nbc bay area's kimberly little terry joins us with the latest on what happened inside and outside of that croom. >> raj, we should know by the end of the month whether it will be a crime to be naked on the streets of san francisco. today a federal judge said he would hand down his ruling on the constitutionality of a new anti-nudity law before it's set to take effect february 1st. public nudity activists who filed a federal lawsuit seeking to invalidate the new law argue it violates their first amendment rights. they say nudity is a form of expression. but in court today, the deputy city attorney argued that simply disrobing in public doesn't send any clear political message. instead she told the judge, it's a threat to public safety. >> there's concern abo

's arturo santiago soins joins us. what now? what changes can be made? >> reporter: the san francisco harbor safety committee, u.s. coast guard and a number of other agencies and experts will now have to not only have to figure out how the overseas raymar hit the bay bridge, you about they also now have to review and improve on their harbor safety plans. after the bridge was hit back in november 2007, the governor ordered agencies to come up with a new plan to keep both the ships and the bay safe. part of what resulted were guidelines for large ships operating in reduced visibility. basically, there are nine so-called critical maneuvering areas in which ships are not allowed to set sail when there's no more than a half mile of visibility. now, according to the watchdog group san francisco bay keeper, there was only a quarter mile of visibility at the bay bridge yesterday morning. officials say that this means this accident exposed a big gap in the san francisco harbor committee's safety plan. >> for example, that shipping channel from the bay bridge to the oakland estuary is definitely cover
